Focus stacking by Greg Benz
★★★★★

This is an excellent course. I have directly purchased other courses from Greg and those are also just excellent. Greg describes and demonstrates in detail all the steps he goes through to achieve the final result. Unlike many other instructors on the Creative Highway network, he does not engage in useless chatter about how much you will love this, but sticks to the topic at hand. I highly recommend that you check out his other courses from his website.

Excellent course on a difficult subject
★★★★★

This was the first course I took from the entire collection, as I am already more familiar with many of the other topics. Greg does a masterful job of walking us through the difficult parts of properly composing, the camera settings that best match the depth of the scene, and the stacking workflow and edits that best bring out the details and tones from front to back. The challenge we have as photographers is being able to capture images that stay sharp throughout, and he covers that also. In the field this is more difficult to visualize, so his tips on how best to adjust for these variations according to the lens you’re using are helpful indeed (for example, foreground cactus and distant rocks behind them). To me, as a student, the knowledge you gain through practice with such scene variations is invaluable in learning when it’s best to add more exposures, and how many. I have also used various stacking software, but I find Adobe Photoshop and Helicon stacking to be the easiest to use.

Not really about focus stacking
★★★★★

I was hoping to get some help with focus stacking: how many images I need, where to focus in different scenarios, and so on. This series of videos is actually 90% post-processing techniques in Lightroom.

He’s clearly an Adobe tool expert with a lot of post-processing experience. I don’t use Adobe tools, so it’ll be a fair challenge to mimic his workflow, but the video does show what to focus on to create the final image. Again, the majority of this, as with other videos, is about post-processing, with very little on the process of focus stacking at the source, in the field.
